Imphal, August 30 2022:
With the main objective to ease traffic congestion in Imphal city, the state government decided to construct parking lots around Imphal city but the plan remains a distant dream as no investor has come forward till date.
The number of vehicles in Imphal city has increased exponentially along with increase in population, thereby leading to traffic congestion but parking problem remains unresolved for a long time.
Imphal city has no proper place for developing parking lots and accordingly MAHUD department identified some areas around Imphal city where multi-tier horizontal circulation parking lots system could be developed to solve this problem.
However, no investor has come forward till datefor funding the project, thereby leaving the parking problem unresolved.
When enquired about steps being taken up to solve parking problem in Imphal city, IMC commissioner Th Harikumar told The People's Chronicle that some areas have been identified for construction of parking lots around Imphal city on PPP model.
Areas identified for construction of horizontal parking lots are at government quarters opposite Kangla moat, North AOC, Nagamapal road and Keishampat electricity complex but it is very disheartening that no response is coming from any investor till date.
He said that PPP model is being applied in other states even in road construction thereby saving huge revenue of the government.
Regarding development of Kangla Nongpok Torban as part of beautification plan of Imphal city under Smart City project, the IMC officer said that Kangla Nongpok Torban project will be extended further to the northern side and Ima Keithel Road development will be extended up to Khoyathong junction.
Meanwhile, double parking in most of the roads in Imphal city is causing inconvenience to public movement and one-way system applied in Paona bazar road from Keishampat towards BT road from May this year remains worthless as double parking continues unabated.
