Imphal, September 14 2021:
A public convention organised jointly by the Thoubal District United Women's Develop-ment Organisation (Thoubal Ima); Ningol Sintha Yaipha Lup (NSYL), Wangkhem and Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) has derided the Government's lack of commitment towards imposing complete ban on alcohol.
The convention was held today at Wangkhem Pukhri Mapal in Thoubal district as a part of CADA's larger campaign to root out the menace of drug abuse and other intoxicants with Khangembam Pramodini, president NSYL; Puyam Sarjubala- vice president NSYL; Moirangthem (O) Sanatombi, secretary Thoubal Ima and Hijam Priyokumar, president CADA as the presidium members on the dais.
CADA general secretary, Geetchandra Mangang also attended the programme as a resource person.
Speaking at the occasion, Geetchandra strongly came out against the Government's effort to legalise liquor in the State by misleading people that ban on liquor has been ineffective.
He further questioned why it is difficult for the State Government to enforce the ban on liquor which is often sold openly when it can hunt or track down anti-social elements with ease.
It only shows the Government's lack of commitment, he said while adding that effective enforcement of ban on liquor can be done if the Government is sincere.
CADA president, meanwhile, maintained that the State Government should not encourage liquor brewing in the name of development and try to justify with unclear explanations.
The State has already been reeling under impact of drug menace and legalisation of liquor brewing will only heap more miseries and ultimately ruin the society, he said.
A public discourse on the topic "Nisha Na Khunnaida Piba Cheitheng Amasung Masibu Thingnaba Meeyam Gi Thoudang" (meaning-Impacts of intoxicants on society and public response to curb the issue) was also held under the aegis of CADA Imphal East District Committee at Keirao Bitra Litan Thongkhong community hall from 2 pm, a statement of CADA said.
The discussion programme was organised in collaboration with Panthoibi Leimarol Lamjing Meira Association and was attended by Ningthoujam (O) Memchoubi, president CADA Imphal East District Committee and Ninthoujam Doren, vice president, CADA as presidium members, it said.
Mayengbam Budhi, secretary organisation of CADA too attended the programme as a resource person, it said.
