Hijam Irawat birth anniversary observed

Different local councils of CPI are observing the 125th birth anniversary of Jananeta Hijam Irawat as part of the monthlong observance being organised by CPI Manipur State Council.
CPI Moirang Local Council organised the observance at Ttonglaobi while observing Covid-19 appropriate behaviour and relevant SOPs on Tuesday.
The participants paid floral tributes to the photo of the leader.
Earlier on Monday, Patsoi local council organised the observance at the residence of its member Khumukcham Joykumar with CPI state Council secretary L Sotirtkumar and former assistant secretary L Thoiren presiding over the function.
Speaking on the occasion, Sotinkumar recalled how Hijam Irawat Stood against the attempt of the Government of India to form a Purvanchal state by combining five northeast states.
He organised a huge public meeting against the policy in Imphal and a clash .broke out between participants of the-meeting from Lamlai side and police at Pungdongbam in which some of the people were killed in police firing.
The incident forced Irawat to go underground and in the aftermath, the Government of India withdrew the proposal of creating Purvanchal, he said and added that the present day Manipur might not exist if Irawat did not opposed the proposal.
