In view of the infestation destroying the stink beans that grow in Willong village, Senapati district; Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation officials inspected the infected plants and identified the insect infesting the stink beans.
Speaking to The People's Chronicle, Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation joint director K Devdutta Sharma informed that a team led district officer Kh Upendro visited Willong to inspect the infestation as directed by CM N Biren.
Upon reaching the village, the team started treating the plants and also brought the insect to Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) here for identification.
The insect infesting the stink beans in Willong has been identified as 'Semilooper', he informed, while adding that department will provide medicines and sprayers to prevent the infestation in stink beans without further delay.
When officials of the department inspected the insect infesting the stink bean, it is found out that the insect is favourably eaten by birds and chickens.
However, the increase in the number of the insect might be because of ecological imbalance due to decrease of birds in the area that could eat the insects.
So, there is a need for careful examination and maintaining the ecological balance, he stressed.
Informing that around 500 stink bean plants that grow in Willong village are drastically infested by the said insects, K Devdutta said that chemicals have been used to control it as an interim measures.
However, for a longer course of action, organic chemicals will be used to control the insect, he added.
