Imphal, September 14 2021:
People For Change, a committee formed under the joint aegis of Manipur Human Rights Commission, Civil Liberty and Human Rights Organisation, and Senior Citizens' Forum, will be carrying out campaign for conduct of free and fair elections in order to bring about developmental changes in the state, said People For Change convener Philem Rohan.
Addressing a press conference at Manipur Press Club here on Tuesday, Rohan said that the committee was formed with the objective of spreading the message of free and fair exercise of the people's democratic rights ahead of the 2022 state assembly election.
The campaign will be carried out under the guidance and advice of several experts and senior citizens while keeping in mind one such similar campaign in Mizoram, which saw huge success.
The campaign in Mizoram was spearheaded by Young Mizo Association with support and guidance from churches and pastors.
The young social activist, who is better known for his activism through nationwide cycling campaigns, said that he had conducted nationwide cycling campaign on the theme 'Humanity Feeding for Hungry'.
Though the campaigner free and fair election cannot cleanse all the muck in politics in the state, the idea is to spread the message and bring positive changes to the best level he can.
During the campaign, the committee will appeal to voters to refrain from hosting or joining feasts related with election, not to accept cash for votes and also to the candidates to refrain from bribing electors.
There is also plan for conducting signature campaign, he said and added that the campaign will be flagged off on September 20 .
