Imphal, February 02 2022:
The All Manipur Muslim Students' Association (AMMSO) has indefinitely shut the Administrative Block and Vice Chancellor's office of Manipur Technical University (MTU) today.
It may be noted AMMSO has been demanding the resignation of Dr Bhabeswar Tongbram, VC, MTU on the grounds that he does not fulfil the required criteria for the VC post.
In a press release, AMMSO informed that in response to the Organisation's statement for Dr Bhabeswar Tongbram to resign as VC of MTU on moral grounds and the inclusion of non-locals among the candidates short-listed to appear in the examination for the recruitment of 32 assistant professors at MTU, authorities of the University had allegedly hired henchmen to threaten AMMSO members and tried to bribe their way into a compromise.
AMMSO asserted that this is a clear indication that some foul play had occurred at MTU.
AMMSO stated that it will continue to stage agitations until Dr Bhabeswar Tongbram has been removed from the VC post.
The statement further informed that Dr Bhabeswar Tongbram had been selected as the VC of MTU despite not fulfilling the required criteria as per UGC Regulation 2018 .
According to UGC Regulation, section 7.3, the VC must have at least 10 years of experience as professor of a University or be the leader of a well-known Academic Administrative Organisation.
In contrast to these parameters, the statement added that Dr Bhabeswar Tongbram had been a Lecturer at Government Polytechnic, Takyel and went on to become Deputy Director, Controller of Technical Education Office.
AMMSO questioned if there was a scarcity of deserving candidates in the State that Dr Bhabeswar Tongbram had been appointed as the VC of MTU.
Further, the statement also shared that on February 29, 2016 Dr Bhabeswar Tongbram was appointed as the Principal (ic) of Govt Polytechnic, Takyel but this appointment was revoked after a few months by the High Court, Manipur upon the revelation that he did not meet the qualifications required as per AICTE norms.
AMMSO also alleged that allowing non-locals to appear in the examination for the recruitment of 32 assistant professors is a violation of the rights of the indigenous people in the State.
