Man held with 9 kg opium

Narcotics and Affairs of Border (NAB) apprehended a person along with 9 kg of opium found concealed in a Maruti Gypsy from Malom Keithel area on Wednesday evening.
The arrested person has been identified as Thounaojam Deven (57) son of late Lukhoi of Khurai Ahongei Leikai.
Police source said that the NAB team was carrying out random frisking operation in Malom Keithel area on Wednesday afternoon, when a Maruti Gypsy (ML05E 4123) heading towards Imphal from Moirang side in a suspicious manner, was intercepted by the team at Malom Keithel around 4.30 pm.
Upon checking, the NAB team found 13 packets of opium hidden in a modified compartment on the side of the Gypsy.
During questioning, Deven, who was driving the Gypsy, said that he has been involved in the illegal trade since several years and had spent jail time in the past in drug trafficking case.
He also disclosed that he bought the opium from a man named Mombi from Chandel district.
NAB PS has registered a case in this regard and started further investigation.
