Protection Committee condemns leasing out of Ungamlen Pat

The Ungamlen Lake Protection Committee has expressed its reservation against the alleged attempt of the Department of Fisheries Manipur to lease out Ungamlen Pat to a private firm.
The committee on Thursday organised a public meeting at Ima Phadibi Community hall in Ithai Wapokpi under Kumbi AC to discuss the matter.
Speaking on the occasion, Oinam Jiban, joint secretary of the committee stated that Ungamlen Pat has a total of about 200 (pari) fields under Fishery No 112.Out of which 50 pari are de-reserved.
He stated that people of nearby areas including Ithai, Ithai Wapokpi and Nongmaikhong are earning their livelihood from the Ungamlen Pat while adding that the acquisition of the lake by the Fisheries Department would have a substantial impact on the lives of the people.

Jiban appealed to the Department of Fisheries to cease its attempt to leash out the lake in the interest of the public.
Vice president of the committee, N Inaoba Meitei stated that the people of nearby villages have been protecting the lake for many years and urged the Department to reconsider its decision to lease out the lake to companies from outside the state.
