Imphal, December 24 2022:
Deeply concerned over increasing crimes committed by individuals possessing licenced guns as well as violence related to misuse of firearms in the state, Youth's Forum for Protection of Human Rights (YFPHR) has urged the government, particularly the home department and deputy commissioners concerned to urgently review norms pertaining to issuance of firearm license and trace sources of proliferation of unauthorised guns to curb unwanted in the future.
In a memorandum addressed to the government of Manipur, YFPHR recalled the recent four past incidents in which one person robbed an I-phone from a mobile store at gun point, a woman shot dead on the night of FIFA World Cup final, an individual firing multiple rounds at a shop and another woman shot dead on Friday at Pallel, and said that these incidents are not the sign of a healthy future for the state but needs immediate intervention from the authorities concerned.
Stating that the Forum is apprehensive of a clandestine network of procuring unauthorised firearms in the state and some section of the society are benefitting from such illegal business, it urged authorities concerned for urgent intervention.
