In his speech at the event, Robertson Ashem said that apart from chief minister N Biren Singh and CF & PD minister L Susindro closely monitoring 22 essential commodity items available in market along with petrol and diesel the government is making every effort to ensure that there is no short age of essential items.
Recently, a video clip about the presence of water in patrol was uploaded on social media following which density of the transport fuel sold at the particular fuel pump was checked though no formal complaint was made.
Weight & Measurement Department too is carrying out surprise checks at wholesale shops and vegetable vendors from time to time and initiating legal action against those indulging in unethical trade practices, he added.
While observing that the consumers seem to lack awareness on their rights, Robertson Ashem stressed the need for carrying out extensive awareness campaigns on consumer rights through the media.
He then sought help from the media houses in this regard and also informed the gathering that steps have been taken up for effective functioning of consumer commission at both the state and district levels from next year.
He also expressed hope that the public would be encouraged to lodge complaints to district commissions if awareness campaigns on consumer rights are conducted effectively.
