Imphal, May 29 2023:
World champion boxer Laishram Sarita Devi has said that the current crisis has been unfortunately portrayed as a clash between Meitei Hindus and Christians to the outside world falsely.
Speaking to DIPR, L Sarita said, "It is heartbreaking to witness harmonious and peaceful Manipur in turmoil due to the violence.
The present conflict is beyond my wildest imagination.
Our lives have been drastically affected and disturbed.
As a player, I always dream of Manipur as a drug-free peaceful society for our youth" .
She stated that it is very unfortunate and very wrong for the rest of the world to gaze at the current issue as a clash between the Meitei Hindus and Christians or between Meitei Hindus and the tribals.
National media should not portray the conflict as such as it is wrong and false.
Sarita said, "It is quite common to have misunderstandings and issues between members of a family, and Manipur's present scenario should be treated like this.
But instead, portraying the issue as of Hindus versus tribals or Meiteis discriminating and torturing the tribals is very unfortunate and false" .
The world-champion boxer said she is earnestly hoping and praying that there will be amends between the two communities and mutual understanding will come again through dialogues.
She also appealed to the people of both the communities to calm down and hope for peace to prevail and to listen to each other's grievances.
Sarita Devi is an Indian boxer from Manipur.
She is a National champion and a former world champion in the lightweight class.
In 2009, she was awarded the Arjuna Award for her achievements.
