Senapati, May 29 2023:
Naga Women's Union (NWU) has strongly condemned the May 24 incident at Kwakeithel near Asian Hospital, Imphal, where four of "our members, Tangkhul women hailing from Namrei village, Ukhrul district, were as-saulted by valley based mob consisting of both men and women on their way to the airport to travel to Mumbai" .
NWU said the four women were stopped and attacked using iron rod and their luggage destroyed.
It continued that the mob assaulted the four women even after identifying themselves as Tangkhuls.
They were also threatened by armed personnel with a loaded gun to shoot if they moved.
The women were traumatised physically and mentally and were treated at Health Care Diagnostic Centre, Mumbai, the NWU added.
NWU "vehemently" denounced the "bitter act" of attacking women with incriminating tools.
"It is too ugly to learn that our state is ruled by mobs and women are unsafe even in broad daylight," it also said.
NWU also expressed dismay on the irrespon-sible Central Control Room, 1st MR, Imphal in-charge Ak Jhalajit Singh for claiming the incident as "it is absolutely false and there is no incident as such" .
It further conveyed that seeing and hearing repeated excuses and apologies after the attack, "we now doubt if it was a deliberation to pacify and justify the barbaric act".
The NWU further urged authority concerned to prioritise in bringing justice and carry out their duty responsibly and diligently in the good interest of the public at the earliest if the "rule of law" still prevails.
