Kakching, May 29 2023:
To dispel fear and worries from the minds of Pallel area residents due to the prevailing situation, Kakching Assembly MLA Mayanglambam Rameshwar spent a night with the people at Pallel.
It may be noted that Pallel area which comes under Kakching district is inhabited by people of various communities.
Here, a large Kuki village also lies adjacent to a Meitei village.
Due to an agreement between the leaders of the two communities to refrain from any acts of violence, the area has not witnessed any untoward incident so far.
However the recent flare-up of violence between the warring communities at Sugnu area has become a cause for worry among the Meitei residents of Pallel area.
Speaking to media persons in this regard, MLA M Rameshwar stated that it is the sworn duty of every elected representative of the State to make efforts to restore peace in the State as soon as possible.
Assuring that the "geographical and emotional integrity" of Manipur will remain intact, the MLA advised against harbouring fears that the State will be disintegrated.
Stating that a memorandum to this effect will also be submitted to the visiting Home Minister, he said that in the eventuality of disintegration, he will join the people and take up appropriate steps in line with the wants and interests of the public.
With regards to the Sugnu violence, he said that many families had fled to Hiyanglam AC while others had been whisked away by their near and dear ones to safe locations.
Around 100 people have also sought shelter at the relief camp at Elangkhanpokpi while an emergency relief camp has been set up at Langmeidong High School to accommodate the displaced families.
Saying that people of the area are tending to the basic needs of the displaced families, the MLA added that he will continue to assist them until they are properly settled.
A relief camp inmate who fled from Sugnu has said that around 2:40 am yesterday, Kuki militants began torching the houses at Napat thus starting the entire episode of violence.
At this time, AR personnel were stationed at the foot of Sugnu bridge, she said.
They did not take any steps to contain the situation, she claimed.
Stating that if the security personnel had at least fired some blank rounds it might have deterred the Kuki militants from torching so many houses, she added that people do not have faith in the AR because of suspicious acts like this.
Lastly, she called for withdrawal of AR from Sugnu area and instead appealed that State forces be deployed to safeguard the people.
