Imphal, October 21 2022:
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president K Meghachandra has decried the State Government's failure to release retirement benefits entitled to retired employees including pension.
Speaking as the chief guest at the 17th Pensioners Day held at Pishumthong under the aegis of the Manipur State Pensioners Union (MSPU) today, Meghachandra quoted a statement given by the Government in the State Assembly which said that the total pending liabilities entitled to retired employees is around Rs 722 crore.
He remarked that retired employees have been facing a lot of difficulties as they are not getting their monthly pension as well as other retirement benefits.
Maintaining that the State Government is responsible for the misery being suffered by retired employees, the MPCC president asserted that the Government is answerable to the issue.
He then urged the Government to take up necessary measures so as to address the woes of pensioners.
He also expressed deep concern at the instances of apathy and negligence shown to retired employees by their own children and dumping them in old age homes.
Parents are next to god and serving them is like serving god, he asserted.
MSPU president Dr M Rajendra said that the union was set up in 2000 with just 45 members and it was registered under the Manipur Societies Registration Act 1989 in 2006 .
The MSPU has now around 4000 members and many more are coming forward to join the union, Dr Rajendra said.
He said that the union was set up with the primary objective of addressing the problems and hardships faced by pensioners.
