Ukhrul bans air gun to shield Amur Falcon

District administration, Ukhrul has banned the use of air gun as well as hunting, catching, killing or selling of Amur Falcon keeping in view of the imminent arrival of the migratory birds, which takes place during October and No vember in Ukhrul district' .
The order was issued following a joint meeting held on Wednesday, which was attended by DC, SP, AC to DC.

During the meeting, the urgent need to ban the use of air gun in view of the imminent arrival of the migratory bird Amur Falcon in Ukhrul district was highlighted.
This bird faces the danger of being hunted, caught or sold during the migratory season, the meeting observed while stressing the need for banning air gun and hunting activities.
The meeting resolved to issue prohibitory order ugaiust the use of Air Cun in the district during the migratory sea son and call for a mass appeal to the general public to refrain from hunting, killing or possessing Amur Falcon.
Consequently, the district magistrate issued an order on the same day enforcing the ban while stating that hunting, killing and destruction of wildlife such as Amur Falcon for food, possession or otherwise is punishable under Section 50 and 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972.Amur Falcon is a schedule IV bird under the Act and hunting, sale and trade of such schedule animal is prohibited.
Anyone who contravenes any provision of this Act is liable to face punishment with imprisonment, which may extend to three years, or with fine which may extend to Rs 25,000, or both, the order stated.
The village authority concerned shall strictly monitor the implementation of the order and in case of any report of violation, SP Ukhrul in consultation with SDOs and DFO concerned shall initiate appropriate action in accor dance with the extant rules, the order added.
