Govt responsible for pensioners' woes: Meghachandra

Manipur State Pen sioners' Union (MSPU) observed the 17th Pensioners' Day at Pensioners Shanglen located at Pishunithong, here, on Friday.
The observance began with offering of floral tributes to departed members of the Union and observing one minute's silence as a mark of respect.
Speaking as chief guest of the function, MPCC president MLA K Meghachandra regret ted that in-spite of the need and importance for proper care of the elderly pensioners by their children, there are various instances and inci dents of negligence of elderly parents by their wards and Keeping them in old age home.
While stating that the government is the guardian of the people and taking up devel opment should be tneir re sponsibility, K Meghachandra maintained that the pension ers will never make extraordi nary demands.

Failure to extend the benefits to the pensioners is unfortunate, he condemned, while claiming that the government is responsible for the inconveniences faced by the pensioners.
In a recent assembly session, the government conceded that the liability amount for the pensioners totaled Rs 772.80 crore.
which made it crystal clear that the incumbent government is not able to pay pension benefits to its retired employees, he said.
While pointing out that after retirement majority of the government employee has no source of income oth er than their pension savings, Meghachandra advised the government to take immediate measures to mitigate suffering of the pensioners.
He also assured of extending all possible help to the pensioners.
The function presided over by MSPU president Dr M Rajendra was also attend ed by vice president L Gun-indro, senior VP L Sharat and Manipur Government Service Federation and Ma nipur Secretariat Service Association president L Purujit as guests of honour.
