Need to boost soil fertility stressed

Agriculture Director, Gojendro Ningthoujam underscored the importance of development of agriculture for the enhancement of India's economy.
He made the above statement while speaking at the one day training programme on 'Improved Soybean Production Technology' held today at College of Agriculture (CoA), Iroisemba, Central Agricultural University (CAU) .
The training programme was organised by All India Coordinated Research Projects (Soybean), CoA, CAU, Imphal under the sponsorship of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Indian Institute of Soybean Research ,Indore.
Gojendro further maintained that agriculture plays a major role in the growth of the industrial sector since most of the raw materials are agro based.
In view of the degrading soil fertility in the State due to excessive use of chemicals and fertilizers, he appealed to all the farmers to carry out agricultural activities by practising measures to preserve soil fertility.
Speaking at the programme, Dean of CoA, CAU Imphal, Professor Indira Sarangthem said that the training programme is organised to encourage plantation of improved and nutritious soybean in the State.
She also maintained that farmers in the State are showing a keen interest in natural farming methods practised by the forefathers.
Such practices will definitely help in keeping the soil healthy and thereby maintaining its fertility, she added.
In-charge of AICRP, College of Agriculture, CAU, Professor L Nabachandra also graced the programme as the guest of honour.
