Ukhrul, August 21 2013:
Ukhrul is reeling under scarcity of essential items, as several goods vehicles along NH-202 (Jessami-Ukhrul) remain stranded for around five days at Marem village in Ukhrul district due to sinking of around 200 ft long stretch of the highway.
The said stretch has sunk to a depth of at least six feet at Marem village, which is situated around 55 kms away from the Ukhrul district headquarters.
Although the matter was informed to the 84 RCC, BRTF Headquarters at Ukhrul, nothing has been done so far to mend the sunk portion.
Stranded truck drivers said that they left Dimapur on August 12 through NH-202 (Kohima-Aizawl via Jessami- Ukhrul).
However, they are constrained to halt at Marem village as they could not negotiate their way through due to the dilapidated highway condition.
As a result, stocks of essential commodities are running low in the district.
Meanwhile, expressing concern over the shortage of essential goods, president of the Tangkhul Trade Council urged the authority to make urgent arrangements to build a road diversion.
In the same vein, the public has urged the authority concerned to make necessary arrangements to avert scarcity of essential goods in the district.
