Imphal, August 21 2013:
With a view to impart children with the knowledge about the impact of drugs on human beings, chapters in this regard will be included in the school syllabus, Education Minister Moirangthem Okendro has informed.
Okendro was speaking as Chief Guest of a day-long State level workshop on "Response to Drugs and Alcohol Problems in Manipur" organized by Psychiatry Department, RIMS at Jubilee Hall here today.
Okendro further stated that we have been talking a lot about the impacts of drugs in our society and have been taking up certain measures to live a healthy life.
However, we have never tried to prevent the harmful impacts of drugs before we get into the habit of drugs.
"We have learnt that "health is wealth" in our early days but it has been not long that we understand what should be done to keep ourselves healthy.
As such, the State Government has decided to impart the knowledge of health and hygiene right from school days", the Minister added.
Dr L Surchandra, President of Indian Psychiatric Society, Manipur State Branch, who was Guest of Honour of the function, stated that even though Manipur has been declared a 'dry State' by the State Government, one could easily get liquors, both foreign or local made from the market if he/she has got the money.
This, in fact, is also one of the main reasons behind the problems of drugs being faced by the State at present.
Delivering the Presidential speech, Dr S Sekharjit, Director of RIMS, observed that even though misuse of drugs is technically not a communicable disease, yet it is a very dangerous and deadly communicable disease if it is look from the perspective of the society as a whole.
In order to prevent this form of disease, the transportation and misuse of drugs should be stopped.
The workshop was divided into three sessions.
The first session was chaired by Prof S Gyaneshwar Sharma, Dr L Surchandra and Prof Ng Brajachand; the second session by Prof W Nabakumar, Prof N Heramani and Dr K Shantibala while the third session by Prof Ak Singh, BB Sharma and Dr S Manikanta.
