Imphal, August 21 2013:
With the worst kind of roads being a part of their daily existence, people in Kanghu Chingjin and Takhel have been suffering the most and development in the two villages under Imphal East district has been hampered.
Kanghu Chingjin village is located under Lamlai A/C of Imphal East, at a distance of about 14 kms from Imphal.
The people of this village are finding it very hard to travel even upto Lamlai bazaar on account of the deplorable condition of roads with potholes everywhere.
The distance from Kanghu Chingjin to Lamlai Bazaar is just 5 kms but it takes hours to cover the distance.
The shortest route from Kanghu Chingjin to Imphal Bazaar is by going along Tinsid Road after passing through Takhel Sanjenbam and coming out at Lamlai Bazaar.
But since the road is in its worst condition, people prefer to take the road leading to Lamlai Keithel along Sawombung road, which is slightly better in comparison.
Interacting with Hueiyen Reach Out team, Y Shyamanda, a school teacher, informed that the main occupation of the villagers of Kangkhu Chingjin village, which has a rough population of 1000 people, is farming.
During the off season, they engaged in planting vegetables and collecting fire woods from the nearby hills.
He further informed that though 'Sabam Loukol', a farm area covering an area of about 60 paris in the village is a very fertile area, total absence of proper irrigation facilities has made the area unfit for cultivation.
If the concerned department could ensure sufficient irrigation facilities and the road stretching from Lamlai Keithel to Kanghu Chingjin, Takhel, Sanjenbam, Tinsid road and further upto Lamlong bazaar is made into a double lane, the farm area could produce lots of vegetables to flood the markets, Shyamanda added.
As in most other villages that Hueiyen Reach Out team had covered, there is no health centre and veterinary centre in Kanghu Chingjin.
Patients needing medical treatment have to go all the way to Imphal.
For those who could afford, they can go to RIMS, JNIMS or any other private hospitals spending huge amount of money for treatment.
But for those who could not afford, they have no option other than resigning to their fate.
No drinking water facilities have also been provided by the government to this village.
The villagers depend on hand pumps and water from ponds for drinking and other household purposes.
Receipt of PDS items on regular basis is also a no-no thing here in this part of Imphal East district.
Though there is a Primary School in Kanghu Chingjin, students have to go to Lamlai Chalou Centre High School for further studies.
There are many students who could not afford to study further after clearing class VII.
As such, the need of a Junior High School in the village was highlighted by the villagers to visiting Hueiyen Reach Our team.
The fate of people Takhel village, which lies just adjacent to Kanghu Chingjin is also the same.
The roads are bad and there is no provision for safe drinking water.
The villagers have to depend on water from hand pumps and local ponds for drinking and other purposes.
It was learnt that the Sanjenbam water supply scheme, which used to provide earlier, has stopped supplying drinking water for the last seven years.
K Mangi, ex-Commissioner, informed that there are only seven students studying in Takhel Primary School and they are being taught by two teachers.
There is one PHC in the village with a nurse but no doctors.
No veterinary centre is also available in the village.
