Imphal, April 06 2023:
A sit-in protest demanding strict punishment of all those people who are sheltering illegal migrants in the state was jointly organised by Gamma Ray Club, Centre for Human Rescuer, Chanam Sandrok Makha Leikai Meira Paibi and Chanam Sandrok Awang Leikai Meira Paibi at Chanam Sandrok community hall in Keirao AC on Thursday.
During the sit-in, the protestors raised slogans demanding implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur, banning entry of illegal migrants in the state and preventing illegal migrants from getting the benefits meant for the locals of the state.
Speaking on the sidelines of the sit-in, Gamma Ray Club general secretary Mutum Ajitkumar recalled instances of illegal migrants found residing in different parts of the state despite law of the land prohibiting the same.
Such cases have not only impacted the demography of the state but some of the illegal migrants have conspired with certain self-vested people in "stealing" the benefits meant for the natives.
This is a huge loss for the indigenous people of the state including the future generation.
Considering this situation, the government should implement NRC to help in identifying the illegal migrants, he contended.
Stating that it was regretful of some people in Chanam Sandrok sheltering illegal migrants out of self-interests and colluding with the outsiders in manipulating the voters' list and depriving local populace of their benefits; he demanded strict punishment of the people involved in the illegal activities.
It would not be wrong to assume that cases similar to Chanam Sandrok's may also be in other parts of the state; Ajitkumar said, while urging the elected representatives not to indulge in wrongdoings for the sake of vote bank politics.
