MU, Okinawa foundation sign MoU

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Manipur University, Canchipur and Okinawa Churashima Foundation, Japan at the MU, Vice-Chancellor's Secretariat Committee Room on Tuesday for cooperation in Life Sciences research and education.
In a release, MU PRO in-charge Wangjam Devendra Singh informed that the MoU was signed on behalf of MU by its registrar Prof W Chandbabu Singh and by Foundation's chairman Dr Yoshihito Hanashiro in the presence of MU School of Life Sciences dean Prof R Varatharanjan, Department of Botany head Prof M Damayenti Devi, Department of Zoology head Prof Th Binoy Singh, Prof N Mohilal Meitei, Asia Supporting Organisation Alternative Plant for Opium Poppy, Japan chairman Yutaka Agatsuma, TMH Green Pvt Ltd Kapashera, Delhi director Teruaki Watanabe and OCRC Laboratory chief Atsushi Abe.
During the MoU signing ceremony, Dr Yoshihito Hanashiro remarked that the MoU would open a window for mutual co-operation and research between the two institutes.
He also emphasised that Manipur could utilise the eco-friendly plant 'Early Paulownia' that grows very fast for biomass consumption and carbon-dioxide absorption.
Meanwhile, VC Prof N Lokendra thanked the Japanese team for their visit and for understanding the University's perception on research and development.
He also observed that the Indo-Myanmar region is a fertile field of flora and fauna where different research activities can be undertaken.
It can be mentioned that Okinawa Churashima Foundation, Japan was established in 1976 aiming to contribute to society both in Japan and around the world in various fields such as the sound mental and physical development of citizens and the conservation of environment as well as to contribute to the local communities by conducting surveys and studies on subtropical flora and fauna.
The MoU focuses on exchange of manpower, protocols, literatures, study materials and collaborative research.
