Imphal, April 25 2023:
Communist Party of India (CPI) has demanded effective remedial measures with regard to the failure of conservation efforts owing to over-dredging of rivers and indiscriminate felling of trees.
In a release, CPI said that although Manipur experiences monsoon season, the present situation is now totally opposite.
This is the consequence of both the fault of us humans and the government.
Recently, the government has been giving vague answers regarding the Singda dam, with a minister stating that the Dam failure was due to water pollution, while the CM attributed it to accumulation of sediments.
Both, however, did not say who was responsible and instead, seem to be protecting those practicing jhumming, which is questionable.
At present, only 1658 water bodies remain in Manipur and it is uncertain whether these water bodies would be able to sustain the state.
Manipur could become the next "Marubhumi (desert)".
In addition, many evidences have been discovered confirming that the Arabian Desert once had a populous, fertile kingdom, the release stated.
It continued that residents of the hills are now all educated and as such, it is perplexing why they still need to continue jhumming.
Thus, the government should take up strict measures including checking over-dredging of rivers and streams by the wealthy and powerful people who also happen to be part of the government.
