Governor visits Moreh, meets DLOs, CSOs; assures help

Imphal, April 25 2023:
Governor Anusuiya Uikey visited border town Moreh in Tengnoupal district on Tuesday and inspected the Integrated Check Post (ICP) among other programmes.
She interacted with district level officers (DLOs), representatives of various civil society organisations (CSOs) and people in an interaction programme held at the auditorium of ICP.
The Governor also inspected Friendship Bridge at Moreh Gate No 1, Shree Angala Parameshwari and Shree Muneeshwarar Temple in Moreh town.
The Governor heard the griev ances and issues faced by the people in the border town arising out of disturbances in the neighbouring Myanmar which led to cessation of all business activities in the town for many years due to sealing of all the routes between India and Myanmar through Moreh town.
She also gave her assurance to extend all possible help for the welfare of the people in the town.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Uikey said that state government and the centre are taking steps to ensure safety and security of people living in the border town, keeping in mind the current restive situation in Myanmar.
While expressing that the humanitarian crisis created by the situation in Myanmar is well-known, she affirmed "we as a democratic country believes human rights have certain obligations.
However, the lack of regulation and proper documentation of the illegal immigrants is a cause of concern".
She stated that state government has constituted a high-powered Cabinet Sub-Committee headed by TA & Hills minister Letpao Haokip to look into the issue of influx of foreign immigrants.
Such steps will reassure the apprehension of the indigenous population who has valid reasons for concern, the Governor said and added that the district administration has started identification and verification of illegal immigrants found settling in the border villages of the district.
She also appealed to all stakeholders including CSOs to extend cooperation to the government in identifying illegal immigrants in the district.
Uikey further stated that Moreh occupies an important place for its potential in securing the country's territory and boosting trade and commerce for the people of both India and Myanmar.
It is also a place of unity in diversity where different ethnic groups not only mingle but thrive.
Credit goes to the Kuki, Meitei, Muslim, Nepali, Naga and Tamil people and many others living in Moreh, she said.
The Governor also lauded the efforts made by police and Assam Rifles in instilling a sense of security to the people in the town.
She assured to extend all help in addressing issues and grievances faced by the people stating that she will ask the chief minister to take steps and also apprise the centre in the best interest of the people.
Letpao Haokip also attended the interaction programme and gave a warm welcome to the Governor.
In his address, minister Letpao said there have been many issues pertaining to livelihood in the town, due to the current situation in Myanmar, leading to stoppage of all business activities and consequently many more problems as business is the sole means of livelihood for most people in the town.
Tengnoupal DC Ranjan Yumnam, who was also present at the event, highlighted various developmental activities taken up under different state and central government schemes in the district.
Tengnoupal SP B Go Lian Mang, 5 Assam Rifles commanding officer Raja Israil, BRTF's colonel Atul Kumar, SDOs, BDOs, other district level officers and officers working in ICP attended the programme.
CSO leaders submitted memoranda to the Governor urging for taking steps to open border with Myanmar so that normal business activities can be resumed.
Earlier, on her way to Moreh, the Governor stopped at Pallel Police Station where she was accorded a warm welcome by Kakching DC Somorjit Salam, Thoubal deputy commissioner A Subhas Singh and other civil and police officers.
