RIs for rape convicts

The Special Judge Fast Track Special Courts number I and II Manipur on Tuesday sentenced two rape convicts to rigorous imprisonment of six years and six months and 10 years respectively for their offences in 2018 .
The convicts were produced before the Courts from Manipur Central Jail Sajiwa.
In the first case, rape convict Pangambam Johnson (32), s/o Dilip of Yairipok Nongbrang Leikai was produced before the Court of Salam Imocha, Special Judge Fast Track Special Court number I for sentence hearing.
He was convicted by the same Court on April 18, 2023 under Section 4 of POCSO Act for sexually assaulting a minor in February 2018 .
During the hearing, the Court heard the submission of Special PP M Bishambar who said that the offence committed by the convict was heinous and he deserves maximum punishment.
The defence counsel, on the other hand, submitted that the convict is a truck driver who lives from hand to mouth.
The defence counsel requested the Court to set off the period (six months) which the convict has served in judicial custody while announcing the quantum of the punishment.
The Court after hearing the submission of the Special PP and defence counsel sentenced the convict to undergo rigorous imprisonment of six years and six months and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 .
In default of payment of fine, the convict has to undergo another month of simple imprisonment, the Court said and set off the six months period which the defence counsel sought.
The Court also directed the State Government to provide a compensation of Rs 1.5 lakh to the victim.
In another case, the Special Judge Fast Track Special Court number II Manipur Ch Brajachand sentenced 32 year old Nemengcha of Pheinom Village, Saikul to undergo rigorous imprisonment of 10 years for 'kidnapping' and sexually assaulting a minor girl under Section 366 IPC and Section 4 of POCSO Act in August 2018 .
Convict Nemengcha @ Memengcha @ Thangtinsem Khongsai @ Sanathoi @ Thoi @ Boisem (32), s/o Eto Khongsai of Pheinom Village, Saikul in Kangpokpi was convicted yesterday.
He was produced before the Court for sentence hearing today.
The Court heard the submission of Special PP M Raichand who sought maximum punishment against the convict and the defence counsel who requested minimal punishment.
The Court after hearing both the submissions sentenced the convict to undergo rigorous imprisonment of 10 years and imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 .
In default of payment of fine, the convict has to undergo simple imprisonment of 3 more months, the Court said.
The Court also directed the State Government to provide Rs 6,00,000 to the victim.
