Imphal, February 17 2023:
A two-day free medical camp jointly organised by Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) and Shija Hospitals & Research Institute (SHRI) with support from local villagers began from Friday at Tingshong village in Senapati district.
On the first day of the camp, around 100 villagers were provided free consultation and check-up for different health issues including general medicine, eye and dental among others.
According to DESAM secretary general Mayengbam Somorjit, Tingshong village is located around 80 km from both Senapati DHQ and Imphal.
It is located at the border of Senapati and Ukhrul district with a population of around 1000 people in around 250 households.
The village is still in a backward condition in almost every aspect of life.
The only health facility in the area is a Primary Health Sub-Centre located at a distance of around 10 km in Tingshong Khullen.
However, the sub-centre is not functioning as it does not have any doctor.
As such, the villagers have to travel a distance of 40 km to reach Oinam village to get medical attention.
But bad road condition often prevents the villagers from seeking medical attention unless the condition becomes a medical emergency.
He expressed concern over the way the government is ignoring the village in every sector and urged the government to set up a Primary Health Centre in the area so that they could get at least primary healthcare services.
He also pointed out that the Hiyang Hirel of Sana Konung, Imphal were made with trees sourced from the village.
