Imphal, December 18 2022:
Manipur Drivers' Association (MDA) has strongly condemned the burning of a sand laden truck (NL01Q4710) which was heading towards Imphal on Friday by suspected volunteers of Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) at the behest of Southern Angami Public Organisation (SAPO) between Phesama and Khuzama, Nagaland.
Following the incident, a team of MDA and associate transport societies, associations and unions filed a report at Khuzama police station on Sunday.
Later, addressing the media at Senapati District Truck Owners' Association office, Tadubi on Sunday, MDA general secretary Sanjay Kshetrimayum stated that though SAPO has banned movement of people of Mao community in their area, it should not disrupt movement of goods laden trucks or harass the drivers and helpers.
National Highways are property of the nation and under the jurisdiction of central government and any obstruction to the flow of traffic on NH is illegal.
Vehicles can be bought and sold and its ownership can change, hence, SAPO volunteers should desist from harming the vehicles and its driver and helper again in future, he emphasised.
Demanding that the Nagaland government must pay compensation for the incident, Sanjay also urged the Manipur and Nagaland governments to bring an amicable solution to the dispute at the earliest as well as appealed to central government to look into the matter.
On the other hand, Senapati District Truck Owners' Association president Daikho Soni termed as unfortunate that SAYO/SAPO targeted a driver and helper and urged all concerned to ensure that such incidents do not recur.
A report has been filed at Khuzama police station regarding the incident.
The police station's officers have also assured of providing escort from Phesama, Nagaland to Mao for the trucks, he further informed.
