Imphal, December 18 2022:
Deeply concerned over imposition of CrPC 144 by the district magistrate at the temporary market shed of Khwairamband Keithel thereby preventing street vendors from doing their daily trading and livelihood activities, the Joint Action Committee for Joint Street Vendors has urged authority concerned to resolve the current impasse at the earliest and provide vending space to genuine street vendors.
According to Committee convener Sh Rajendro, Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) is responsible for emergence of many newly formed and unregistered street vendors' associations.
He also alleged that incompetency of IMC led to odd activities of newly formed associations and their activities created divisions among the street vendors of Khwairamband Keithel.
Had the IMC chairperson, mayor and executives worked sincerely, the present crisis would not have happened at all, he added.
During the past Congress government, the then IMC chairperson formed a vending committee but the committee which was formed illegally was annulled by the court after All Manipur Street Vendors' Association lodged a complaint.
The court then declared All Manipur Street Vendors' Association as the legitimate body for street vendors.
Even though the Supreme Court ruled for protecting rights of street vendors across the country, rights of street vendors in Manipur continue to be suppressed, Sh Rajendro said, while addressing media persons at Manipur Press Club, here, on Sunday.
