Farmers trained, mustard field assessed

Kakching, February 12 2023:
An official team of the directorate of extension education, Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal assessed the mustard farms in Kakching district on Sunday.
CAU earlier provided mustard seeds to the farmers through Kakching Indigenous Farmers' Co-operative Society (KIFCO).
Interacting with the media, CAU directorate of extension education, head of entomology department professor Dr Kh Ibohal said that farmers in Kakching district are hard-working and CAU assisted them by providing seeds of two varieties of mustard and bee boxes through KIFCO.
He appreciated the cooperation from KIFCO chairman Yengkhom Nilachandra in this venture and expressed happiness on the success of the initiative.
Informing that the crop yield will be more than they expected, he said that keeping bee boxes in the farm contributes to good harvest.
It is scientifically proven that keeping bee boxes in mustard farm not only shortens the harvest time by 15 days but also enhances crop yield by 9 per cent and oil production by 4 per cent.
Moreover, it helps in enhancing crop productivity in the next season, he said while urging the farmers across the state to take benefits of mixed vegetable farming with bee keeping for enhanced productivity.
KIFCO chairman Y Nilachandra said that the organisation has been working with CAU, ICAR and horticulture department for several years.
This time, they coordinated with CAU and he can see the expected crop yield, which is more than they expected.
He assured of further assistance to farmers of the area.
Later, a one-day training programme on 'scientific poultry farming' was held at the residence of Nilachandra.
The training programme was organised by CAU directorate of extension education in association with ICAR - National Institute of Biotic Stress Management (NIBSM) Chhattisgarh, KIFCO and SUS Kakching.
Chicks and bee boxes were distributed to 35 farmers, who attended the training programme.
