Imphal, August 01 2022:
Chief minister N Biren has informed the Manipur Legislative Assembly that the decision for setting up Sangai Ethnic Heritage Park at Moirang Khunou area was taken in the larger interest of the people of the state.
Replying to a calling attention motion moved by Opposition member K Ranjit Singh in connection with the protest and apprehension of the public over the government's decision to shift the site for construction of the park, N Biren said that the committee constituted for the project visited Keibul Lamjao frequently and assessed feasibility of setting up the park.
Citing recommendation of the committee, CM Biren said that the area (Keibul Lamjao) where the park is being proposed for establishment is not proportionate to accommodate structures such as 34 different houses of the ethnic tribes, conference hall, parking lot, etc.
He also said that setting up the heritage park close to Keibul Lamjao National Park will disturb the natural habitat of Sangai and accordingly the government decided to set up the park at Moirang Khunou which is not far from Keibul Lamjao National Park.
Nevertheless, the government is considering to set up one of the components of the heritage park at Keibul Lamjao and the same could be taken up at an appropriate location, he said and assured of meeting agitating people of Keibul Lamjao after returning from Delhi to take up appropriate arrangements suitable with the area of Keibul Lamjao.
