Imphal, August 01 2022:
Opposition MLA K Ranjit has exerted pressure on the government for tabling a statement in the on going state assembly session in connection with the June 29 tragic landslide at Makhuam village in Noney district.
Bringing up the issue of the landslide during zero hour of the assembly session on Monday, K Ranjit said that such destructive natural disaster on Marangching hill range had never occurred in the state and out of 79 victims washed away by the landslide, 18 sustained injuries and 61 of them remained untraceable.
After the government took up prompt actions, 56 bodies were recovered while five of the victims still remain traceless.
Acknowledging the government's effort and the intensive search and rescue operation conducted, Ranjit said that they also knew about the inspection done by the chief minister at the spot two/three times through print and electronic media.
Construction of railway line began after getting the forest clearance.
However, it came to light through media reports that the survey carried out by Manipur Meteorological Department pointed out presence of huge underground cracks in two areas making the area prone to landslide.
As such, the area is still vulnerable to witness similar landslide, he expressed apprehension.
Taking into account of the opinions of experts, the state government needs tp table a statement in the House so as to prevent untoward incidents due to such landslide in future.
The 60 representatives present in the House have enormous responsibilities, he continued, while adding that non tabling of statement on such tragic incident may mislead the House before the public.
K Ranjit maintained that they have been waiting for a statement of the state on the tragic landslide.
As it was never brought up in the House even during the concluding parts, he raised the issue in the zero hour.
Urging the people to stay alert, MLA Ranjit stressed the need for taking up the issue as a motion during the assembly session and discussing it thoroughly.
