DEOs conduct Aadhaar number collection drives

District Election Office, Thoubal on Monday launched a drive for collection of Aadhaar numbers from existing electors or citizens seeking registration in electoral roll.
Speaking at the launching programme held at the conference hall of the deputy commissioner of Thoubal, DEO/DC A Subhash Singh said that the purpose of linking the electors with their Aadhaar numbers is to avoid duplicity in the electoral roll and to have a strong and healthy electors.
Giving a PowerPoint presentation at the programme, ADM Thoubal B Lokeshor said that by using Form 6B an electors can link his/her Aadhaar number with the electoral roll, adding that as per the ECI guidelines EROs, AEROs or any officials cannot force the electors to link their Voter ID cards with Aadhaar numbers.
He further informed that earlier the qualifying date for a citizen to enrol in the electoral roll was 1st of January only but now ECI has given four qualifying dates - 1st January, 1st April, 1st July and 1st October.
The programme was also attended by EROs, AEROs, BLOs and representatives of various political parties.
In Churachandpur, the district level Aadhaar collection drive was launched at the DC's conference hall during a meeting convened by DEO/DC Sharath Chandra Arroju.
As a part of the event, officials were trained regarding collection of Aadhaar card numbers from those trying to register names in the electoral roll.
Representatives from political parties such as BJP and NPP apart from electoral registration officers, assistant electoral registration officers of Churachandpur and Pherzawl districts and representatives of NGOs took part in the meeting.
Additional DC Yumnam Nelson gave a PowerPoint presentation on changes introduced in electoral service form.
Aadhaar card and Voter ID card linkage is undertaken so as to identify the names of deceased electors and to detect whether one is a citizen of the country or not, Nelson said.
Also in Chandel, the district election officer launched the collection drive of Aadhaar card numbers for Chandel and Tengnoupal districts.
Speaking at the function held at the conference hall DC complex Chandel, DEO Chandel Mayanglambam Rajkumar informed that according to the ECI, the linking of voter ID cards with Aadhaar cards is being done with a view to establish the identity of electors and authentication of entries in the electoral roll.
He further said that linking Voter ID with an Aadhaar card will help in the identification of registration of the name of the same person in more than one constituency or more than once in the same constituency.
The DEO also cautioned the public from doing such and also warned that strict actions will be taken if any miscreant tries to disturb the process.
He then urged the public to support the process by providing the Aadhaar number or by linking it online voluntarily although it is not compulsory to for the time being.
During the programme, ADC Chandel M Firoj Khan explained in detail about the election laws and the new amendments passed by the Lok Sabha in December 2021, and the process of linking the Aadhaar number with the voter ID cards.
Besides the election officials of both Chandel and Tengnoupal districts, district level officers, representatives of different political parties, NGOs and other stake holders from the two districts took part in the day's event.
