Commando driver hurt in attack

Imphal, June 09 2021:
One commando member of Manipur police was left injured after heavily armed persons of an unknown group attacked a team of Manipur Police special commandos near Khongsang Rengpang village in Noney district around 4pm Wednesday.
The injured person identified as Thokchom Sachikumar is driver of the special commando team.
Sachiku- mar suffered gunshot wound on his left abdomen.
According to a police report, the commando team went to the area in connection with DIG Themthing's visit to Rengpang on Wednesday.
After the visit, the DIG left via Khoupum route, while a team of Bishnupur District Police Commando in a Rakshak vehicle and a Maruti Gypsy of Imphal West District Police, attached to the Special Commandos, was returning through the road near Rengpang Part-III when they came under heavy fire from the unknown persons who were hiding in the area.
The bullets hit the body and the windshield of the Rakshak which was in the front of the convoy.
Driver Sachikumar was also struck by a bullet on his abdomen, while the commando retaliated and fired several shots towards the attackers.
Sachikumar was immediately taken to Noney PHC where he received emergency first aid and was later taken to Imphal for further treatment.
On receiving news of the attack, additional forces from Noney District Headquarters and Imphal rushed to the scene and conducted search operation late into the evening.
However, there were no reports of any arrests made till the time of filing this report.
Mention may be made here that the special commando team was stationed at the special commando outpost at Rengpang Power House to monitor the law-and-order situation in Rengpang area.
The attack occurred while the team was returning to the outpost following DIG Themthing's visit.
