DC-led signboard drive peeves tribal body

A combined team of Kakching district police and administrative officials led by deputy commissioner Somorjit Salam on Thursday removed and erased all the signboards in Kakching district that have Chandel and Tengnoupal districts written on them.
The drive of erasing the signboards was carried out following a notice issued by Kakching SDO/SDM Okram Sandhyarani on October 6 for removal of signboards put up Within Kakching sub-division that have Chandel and Tengnoupal districts written on them within seven days.
As people and shops concerned failed to remove the signboards in question within the stipulated time, the district administration carried out the drive.
Meanwhile, Tribal Rights Protection Committee, Chandel and Tengnoupal district has denounced the act of erasing signboards by district administration and further cautioned of launching intense protest if the government fails to suspend the DC within ten days.
Speaking to media persons in this regard at Molnoi on Friday evening, Committee vice president C Rumthang Mate informed that a memorandum condemning the instruction of district administration to remove signboards was submitted to chief minister N Biren, TA & Hills minister Letpao Haokip, Chandel MLA SS Olish, Commissioner of Revenue Department, Chief Conservator of Forests and deputy commissioners of Kakching, Tengnoupal and Chandel districts.
He also contended that the villages located in the foothills of Tengnoupal district have been recognised by Hill Areas Village Authority Act and all developmental schemes and administrative affairs were done and house taxes paid under Tengnoupal and Chandel DCs.
None of the benefits were provided from valley districts, he asserted.
Terming the act of erasing signboards by Kakching DC and SDO as inciting conflict and confrontation, he urged the government to take action against them and cautioned of launching intense protest if authorities concerned fail to take up appropriate action.
