AR holds meet on football tourney, conducts friendlies

Imphal, December 14 2022:
DIG, Churachandpur Sector of IGAR (South) held interaction with chief advisor of Hmar Martyrs' Trophy Organising Board at Tuibong on Wednesday to review preparation for conduct of the (late) Lt Col Rajeev Bakshi Football Tournament in January 2023 at Parbung in Pherzawl district.
While informing that the tournament is organised annually to commemorate valour of Lt Col Rajeev Bakshi, PRO IGAR (S) said in a release that Rajeev Bakshi, fondly called as The Tiger of Parbung' hailed from Panchkula, Haryana and was third generation army officer from a family of glorious tradition of military service.
He was commissioned into the 13 Dogra Regiment of the Indian Army in 1991 .
On January 20 in 2006, Lt Col Bakshi was leading his troops for a counter insurgency operation in Parbung.
During the fierce encounter, he was critically wounded and succumbed to his injury.
(Late) Lt Col Bakshi was conferred Sena Medal (posthumously) for his exceptional courage, fighting spirit and supreme sacrifice, added the PRO.
Meanwhile, Loktak Battalion of IGAR (South) organised a friendly volleyball match at Temporary Operating Base Kumbi in Bishnupur district on Wednesday between unit troops and local youth clubs of Setupur, Kumbi.
The participants and spectators lauded the initiative and expressed hope that such events will give fillip to "Assam Rifles-youth interaction" and foster a healthy competitive spirit among the youth of the area.
The local youth club of Kumbi highly appreciated the initiative of Loktak battalion for organising the event.
The match culminated with distribution of sports items and light refreshments to generate interest in the youth to showcase their talent in the held of sport.
