Imphal, December 14 2022:
Manipur University's School of Mathematical and Physical Science dean professor K Yujingdro has stated that sending the recommendation for inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in the ST list by the government of Manipur would be the right step to protect the community.
He was speaking in a one day seminar organised by Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) on the topic 'Present status of Meetei/ Meitei' at MU court hall on Wednesday.
The inaugural function of the seminar presided over by MUSU president Sanasam Steven was attended by professor K Yugindro as chief guest and Manipur State Commission for Schedule Tribes, Imphal member Dr Tara Manchin Hangzo as guest of honour.
Speaking at the programme, professor Yugin-dro highlighted the stealthy influx of immigrants from neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Myanmar as well as migrant workers from other states.
He said that the outsiders will outnumber the indigenous Meetei population if there is no constitutional mechanism to safeguard the community.
As there is strong possibility that the indigenous Meetei community will go extinct in 10-15 years, ensuring constitutional safeguard is of paramount importance, he maintained.
Future stating that future of the community is unpredictable as railway line will also reach Imphal after some years, he recalled that several memorandums were submitted from 2012 since the time of the then CM O Ibobi.
The previous CM Ibobi as well as the present CM N Biren assured of taking up steps for inclusion of Meetei in the ST list even in assembly session, but the assurances are yet to be translated into action till now, he contended.
In the technical session moderated by retired IAS Rk Nimai, Manipur University of Culture assistant professor Dr Thounaojam Ruhichand spoke on 'Present status of Meetei/Meitei in relation with the cultural and traditional practices of Manipur', MU Department of Law associate professor Dr Yumnam Premananda on 'Inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in Schedule Tribe list-international and Indian law' and MU Department of Economics professor Chinglen Maisnam on 'Socio-economic condition of Meetei/Meitei and its future' as resource persons.
