Sit-in protest continues against alcohol legalisation

Imphal, December 14 2022:
As part of their ongoing protest against the State Government's decision to legalise alcohol, the Coalition Against Drugs & Alcohol and local women's organisations staged a sit-in protest at Sambei Ima Community Hall under Imphal East today.
According to a statement issued by CADA, the protest was jointly organised by All Manipur Women Social Reformation & Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj), Women Welfare Association, Sambei and CADA.
The protestors demanded the revocation of alcohol legalisation and raised slogans for the people of Manipur to be saved from alcohol abuse.
Speaking by the sideline of the protest, Nongthombam (Ongbi) Tamu, member, Women Welfare Association, Sambei urged the State Government to roll back the decision to legalise alcohol, stating that alcohol abuse has led to the deaths of many men and in many instances they leave behind widowed wives.
Separately, a torch rally was organised by All Manipur Women Social Reformation & Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj), the Thoubal District United Women's Development Organisation (Thoubal Ima), Khekman Women Anti Drugs & Alcohol Organisation, Women Empowerment Organisation, Khekman Mathak in association with CADA yesterday night at Thoubal Khekman.
As per a statement, the torch rally was flagged off from Khekman Thongjao, passed through Khekman Lairembi Leikai and many other localities of Khekman and finally culminated at the starting point.
