Imphal, June 03 2022:
According to community medicine report, around 40 out of every 100 people are suffering from insomnia or due to related ailments.
Based on this research, efforts are being made to set up a Sleep Laboratory in the state, RIMS Psychiatric Department head Dr RK Lenin has stated.
On Friday, RIMS Psychiatric Department in association with ISSR, New Delhi organised a one-day conference on "Sleep Well for Wellbeing" at the Jubilee Hall of RIMS, in connection with the 45th Foundation Day of the Department.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr RK Lenin, who is also the organising chairman, emphasised the need for the human body to sleep, while adding there are various treatments to treat insomnia even without medicine.
Lack of sleep could be caused by tension, stress or due to an illness.
Researches have shown that 40 out of every 100 people are suffering from insomnia.
Sleep is vital for the human body for lack of it could result in death.
Humans spend approximately one-third of their lives either sleeping or attempting to sleep.
It would be wrong to think that sleeping is waiting time as this is the time when the body recharges its energy.
People have become more aware of the need of sleep and the impact seems to be even greater post-Covid as many people are pouring in for consultations, he conveyed.
Dr Lenin continued that sleep is also important for children as it aids in healthy growth both physically and mentally.
Apart from this, eating a balanced diet and doing regular exercise are necessary for good health.
However, there have been instances of people dying in their sleep owing to sickness or other issues.
To explain this, there is the mechanism of sleep medicine and sleep laboratory.
However, there is no such facility in the state at the moment.
If this facility were to be set up in the state, it would prove beneficial, he remarked.
Dr Lenin then said that the first and foremost symptom one exhibits due to poor health, physically and mentally, is lack of sleep.
However, people often ignore the need to ease the tension, thereby getting deprived of the much needed sleep.
Informing that discussions will be held with the experts of Indian Society for Sleep Research, which is one of the largest scientific groups in the country; Dr Lenin explained that there is a difference between lack of sleep suffered by children and adults.
With respect to children, the causes could range from stubbornness, poor immunity and over indulgence in playing video games on mobile phones.
Adults need at least 8 hours of sleep in a day, while the duration should be higher for children.
However, the required hours of sleep are in disarray due to playing games on mobile phones before bedtime resulting in dozing off in classes, poor grades and health and getting used to over-the-counter medicines.
But it must be noted that one can get addicted to the drugs while the efficacy becomes lower and lower.
The cause of lack of sleep is different from person to person.
Thus, doctors should be consulted with before taking any medicines, he cautioned, while stressing the need for practicing Yoga, doing regular exercise and being careful about nutrition.
Dr Lenin then urged the people to try to relieve their minds of all burdens before bedtime so as to ensure a long life and prevent any illness.
The conference was also attended by EMRI additional deputy director general Dr L Swasticharan as chief guest and ICSSR, New Delhi president Dr Hrudananda Malik as president, while RIMS MS Dr Nepram Sanjib and Dean (Academic) Dr Brogen Singh Akoijam were present as guests of honour.
