State gears up for Environment Day, trees planted

Imphal, June 03 2022: As a part of the worldwide observance of World Environment Day, Directorate of Environment & Climate Change will organise a state level function on June 5 based on the UN theme 'Only One Earth' starting from 9 am near the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) site, Heirangoithong Maibam Leikai.

According to a release by Directorate of Environment & Climate Change director Dr'Y Nabachandra Singh, the observance will be attended by chief minister N Biren as chief guest and forest , environment and climate change minister Th Biswajit Singh as president while Langthabal MLA Karam Shyam, chief secretary Dr Rajesh Kumar, additional chief secretary (Forest, Environment and Climate Change) MH Khan and Dhanamanjuri University (DMU) vice chancellor professor N Rajmuhon Singh would be guests of honour.

As a part of the observance, tree saplings would be planted followed by felicitation of CM's Green Manipur Mission brand ambassador Elangbam Valentina Devi and Royal Riders Manipur, Langol, Lamphelpat, release of World Environment Day stickers/t-shirts/caps and flagging off of Royal Riders Manipur's Motorcycle Rally by the chief guest.

The plantation programme will continue on the eastern side of Shri Shri Govindajee Temple, Kangla with Royal Riders Manipur, the director said and urged people of the state to attend the observance.

Meanwhile, All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) Imphal West District Committee launched a 3-day Mass Tree Plantation Pro gramme in connection with the observance of World Environment Day on Friday with volunteers of AMSU Wangoi and Mayang Imphal branch planting saplings in areas surrounding their respective offices.

On the other hand, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) , Imphal West District Council will organise the 2nd District Level Painting Competition 2022 under the theme 'Sustainable Development through Environmental Protection' on June 5, as part of World Environment Day observance.
