One day conference on 'Sleep' : Importance of 'proper sleep' deliberated

A one day conference on 'Sleep' was held today at the Jubilee Hall of RIMS organised by the Department of Psychiatry, RIMS and Indian Society for Sleep Research (ISSR), New Delhi.
The conference which was held as a part of the 45th foundation day observation of the Department of Psychiatry, RIMS was graced by Dr L Swasticharan, Additional Deputy Director General and Director (EMR, IH), Directorate of Health Services, MOHFW, Govt of India, Dr Hrudananda Mallick, president ISSR New Delhi, Dr Nepram Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent, RIMS, Dr Brogen Singh Akoijam, Dean of Academics RIMS and Dr RK Lenin Singh, organizing chairman as the presidium members.

Speaking as the chief guest, Dr L Swasticharan underscored the need of spreading awareness among the masses regarding the importance of sleep.
Sleeping is an essential part of one's life and sleep disorders can lead to many ill effects on one's health therefore it is important to consult doctors and experts when one experiences such disorders, he added.
While addressing the gathering, Dr RK Lenin said that a sound health and having proper sleep is closely interrelated and if sleeping pattern is disturbed, it will have a direct impact on one's health.
He went on to state that earlier, not much attention was given to sleep disorders and its impacts, however people have started to realize the ill-effects of sleep disorders these days and have come for consultations or counselling especially after the COVID-19 pandemic.
He asserted that having proper sleep revitalizes the body and it provides energy to perform normal daily activities.
Expressing concern over the current sedentary lifestyle of today's generation, he said that these days people have drifted from the healthy lifestyle and are more into unhealthy ones such as eating junk foods, increased screen time owing to excess use of mobile phones and so on.
He maintained that children these days are into mobile phones which have disrupted their sleeping pattern tremendously thereby depriving them of a healthy future which is really unfortunate.
In regards to such toxic lifestyles, Dr RK Lenin stated that it is high time one starts acknowledging the importance of good health and proper sleep so as to lead a good and healthy life.
