Imphal, May 18 2022:
Following heavy rains in the past few days, water level of the rivers flowing through the twin capital districts such as Nambul and Imphal, as well as rivers in other districts of state, has risen significantly, with many areas getting inundated.
Imphal river is not only flowing above the danger level but is at risk of breaching its banks in New Checkon area, specifically on the eastern side of the river near the Eastern Kangla gate; Singjamei Mongkhang Lambi and parts of the river's tributaries.
People residing nearby were seen trying to repair and strengthen the banks.
On the other hand, heavy rainfall has left many houses flooded in Greater Imphal area, which already lacks a proper drainage and sewage system.
Flood prone areas such as Imphal-Wangkhei and Palace Gate - Checkon roads, as well as areas in Wangkhei, Sagolband, Yaiskul and Langthabal ACs, have been inundated.
In Wangkhei AC, the flood water is already knee deep in Wangkhei Angom Leikai and Sagolband Moirang Leirak areas.
Kakwa area has also been heavily flooded, causing massive inconveniences to people commuting through the inundated areas.
Unfortunately, amidst the panic among the masses, the two helpline numbers (2451550/2450195) of the Flood Control Room of Water Resource Department could not be reached, despite multiple attempts by The People's Chronicle.' Incessant rainfall over the past one week is also causing disruption to vehicle traffic along the major highways of Manipur.
Vehicular movement along the important Imphal-Jiribam highway also remains suspended.
Collapse of a bailey bridge has resulted in zero vehicular movement along the Imphal-Jiribam highway.
Meanwhile, vehicular movement along the Imphal Mao highway has also been affected after damage to the Motbung bridge.
