Imphal, May 18 2022:
While stating that museums are an important part of human society, ULF former chairman-turned-social activist RK Meghen has pointed out that the museums play a huge role in bringing changes to the society.
He made the statement on the sidelines of observance of International Museum Day at Manipur University Museum on Wednesday.
Speaking on the occasion, RK Meghen remarked that developed countries understand the importance of museum especially in the preservation of past glory of a civilisation.
In Manipur's context, various museums have been opened at different locations, one of which is the Manipur University Museum.
The emerging generations could play a pivotal role in preservation of our past through museums in addition to offering glimpses of the future, he added.
Meanwhile, under the aegis of Department of Art and Culture, Manipur State Museum inaugurated a 5-day painting competition at its auditorium on Wednesday, in connection with the observance of International Museum Day.
The inaugural function was attended by Art and Culture commissioner M Joy as chief guest, director A Kiswajit as president and ex-director Dr K Sobita as guest of honour.
In his speech, M Joy lauded the theme, 'The Power of Museum ", provided by International Council of Museum (ICOM) in connection with the observance for this year.
However, instead of giving it the tag of power', it should be called 'power house', he said.
The movement would not only put museum in the limelight but would also help in promotion of tradition, costumes and other cultural elements, he added.
Stressing the need for spreading awareness about museum amongst the masses, the commissioner also suggested setting up living museum in hill areas or any suitable area, which in turn will not only benefit the education of the students but also attract tourists.
