MHA notifies census deferment

Imphal, September 05 2026:
The Ministry of Home Affairs (Office of Registrar General, India) has issued a notification today on deferment of census exercise in Manipur.
According to the notification issued by Registrar General of India and Census Commissioner Mritunjay Kumar Narayan, the Central Govt has deferred the houselisting operations for Census 2027 for Manipur.
The notification issued earlier by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India on January 7, 2026 and published in the Gazette of India has also been amended by inserting "except the State of Manipur till further declaration" after the words "in all States and Union territories in India" .
A high-level meeting held on August 31 among Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan and other senior officials decided to defer census in Manipur.
However, no official notification was issued after the meeting or the next day.
Several CSOs, particularly the JFD, were demanding the Government to issue an official notification on the decision adopted at the high-level meeting.
The matter even became a subject of hot debate between the Govt and the Opposition on the first day of the ongoing Assembly session.
