More displaced villagers evacuated

Senapati, September 05 2026: Another 37 displaced villagers from violence-hit Tapon Namsan (Lower) village were evacuated to Senapati on Friday night, taking the total number of villagers rescued from the affected Tapon villages to 82 .

The villagers were brought to Senapati District Headquarters at around 11:30 pm by Senapati Police and the 16 Assam Rifles and subsequently shifted to a temporary relief centre set up by the district civil society organisations in coordination with the Senapati District Administration.

With the latest evacuation, a total of 60 displaced villagers are currently staying at the temporary relief centre in Senapati.

Speaking to the media at the relief centre, Tapon Namsan Village Authority treasurer Gladstone Abonmei spoke about the September 1 attack and alleged that armed Kuki militants started indiscriminate firing at around 4:15 am before setting ablaze the residential houses.

Abonmei, who sustained injuries during the incident, said he and several villagers took shelter beneath a large rock as firing continued.

With their houses and belongings destroyed, he said the villagers were left with nowhere to stay and little to survive on.

The villagers expressed gratitude to Senapati Police and the 16 Assam Rifles for reaching Tapon Namsan (Lower) and safely evacuating them to Senapati.

They, however, appealed to the authorities concerned and security forces to provide adequate protection and assistance to the displaced families, stressing that they have been forced to abandon their homes following the attack.
