Imphal, September 05 2026:
The 14 CSOs, Kangleipak, has called for cooperation among different organisations and members of the public to strengthen the movement demanding updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before the census in Manipur.
In a press note, the 14 CSOs said that they, along with like-minded organisations and community leaders, have been working together to ensure that the NRC is updated to identify bona fide citizens in Manipur.
Some groups, however, have been making baseless allegations that the 14 CSOs are working for the Government with the malicious intent of hindering the movement, it claimed.
Saying that such attempts to mislead the public would not discourage them, the 14 CSOs said that their movement for updation of the NRC before the census is not a private matter but an issue concerning the public.
It added that the 14 CSOs organised a public rally on June 8, 2026, following which several resolutions concerning the census were adopted.
Saying that they placed the resolutions before the elected representatives for translation into action, the 14 CSOs added that they also met Central leaders in New Delhi and apprised them of the grievances of the people.
The 14 CSOs said that meeting and approaching elected representatives and Central leaders was part of their movement to ensure that the NRC is updated before the census.
Politicising the issue by portraying it as a BJP or Congress matter would be wrong, it said and added that the 14 CSOs had also placed the people's demand before NPP leader Conrad Sangma, RPI leader Ramdas Athawale and other Central leaders.
The 14 CSOs had also filed a case before the High Court of Manipur challenging the move to conduct the census in Manipur, it said, adding that the census was subsequently suspended.
Saying that a case related to the NRC is also pending, it added that the 14 CSOs would discuss the future course of the movement with the people if there is any possibility of the movement failing.
