Private hospitals top choice for CS in state

Though World Health Organisation (WHO) has set a 15 per cent Caesarean-Section rate as the top limit for all deliveries, Manipur records more than half of the deliveries in private hospitals through C-Section while almost a quarter in government hospitals.
As per National Family Health Survey (NFHS) - 5 report, the state is witnessing an increase in institutional deliveries.
The state recorded 69.1 per cent institutional deliveries in NFHS-4 (2015-16) and 79.9 per cent in NFHS-5 (2019-20) .
Institutional delivery in urban area has reached 92.5 per cent against 73.9 per cent in rural areas.
While 24.7 per cent of deliveries in government facilities are through C-Section, it is 53.2 per cent in private hospitals.
Only 85.6 per cent of deliveries are conducted in the presence of skilled health professionals.
In terms of maternity care, 79.9 per cent of pregnant women undergo antenatal check-up while 79.4 per cent undergo all the four mandatory antenatal check-ups.
Unfortunately, only 30.3 per cent of the pregnant women consume iron folic acid for 180 days and 70.3 per cent of mothers consult health professionals within two days of delivery, the report said.
Vaccination of newborns up to 23 months is low in private facilities as compared to government facilities.
Altogether 92.3 per cent of newborn have their vaccination in government facilities while only 5.6 per cent go to private facilities.
Status of fully vaccinated children in the state is 75.7 per cent, the report stated.
