Protest demands anti-racism law

A sit-in protest was held yesterday in front of GP Women's College demanding Anti-Racism Law in India.
The protest was held under the auspices of All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) .
Speaking to reporters at the protest venue, Thiyam Naresh, President of AMSU said that people of North East India faced racial discrimination from mainland Indians since long.
Some have been killed while many women from the region have faced sexual assault.
Nido Tania was beaten to death, two girls from the State were sexually assaulted in public view and a 14-year old girl from the State was raped this year.
Amidst protests raised against the recent incidents, two youths from the State were reportedly stabbed, the AMSU president said while strongly demanding an anti-racism law in order to prevent the recurrence of such unwanted acts in future.
He also said that a campaign for enactment of a strong anti-racial law would be taken out in the NE region through the North East Students' Organisation.
The students' leaders also urged the State Government and political parties of the State to take the issue of racial discrimination seriously.
