Library Day observed

Library Day was observed at the State Central Library Hall today organised by the State Central Library in association with Manipur Library Association (MALA).
Library Day is observed on August 12 every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr SR Ranganathan who is known as the Father of Library Science.
L Kishwoijit Singh, Director of Arts and Culture; RK Urmila Devi, Chief Librarian, State Central Library; Dr N Giridhari Singh, former Librarian RIMS and K Chaoba Singh, president MALA graced the occasion as the presidium members.
Addressing the gathering, RK Urmila Devi said that the day is observed with the objective to inculcate reading habit among the youths and students in particular to enhance library movement in the State.
She went on to inform that the State Central Library has around 500 readers at present and the reading hours in the library has been extended starting from 9.30 am till 8.30 pm as per the directives of the Chief Minister to encourage the readers in the State.
She further highlighted that lack of infrastructure and staff in the library has hindered the effective functioning of the library and appealed to the authorities concerned to look into the matter.
Expressing discontent over the failure to return books to the library on time, she said that moving forward strict actions will be taken against the defaulters.
