Imphal, August 12 2022:
Manipur University of Culture (MUC) vice chancellor Professor Paonam Gunindro has stated that that varsity is eyeing to become a hub for South East Asian cultural studies in the near future.
He made the statement while speaking as the chief guest of the 7th Foundation Day celebration of the university held at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Palace Compound here on Friday.
Prof Gunindro said that owing to the state's poor financial conditions, the university could not be set up at a more suitable location, and also lacks the necessary infrastructures.
Despite this, the varsity has not slowed down its academic activities.
Fortunately, the allotment process of a 118 acres land in Wakha, Imphal East is nearing completion and discussions are underway to seek central grants for construction of the university, he conveyed.
The recent survey of 455 state universities in India included only 3 cultural universities, namely Utkal University of Culture, Odisha, which was the first to be set up in the country, followed by MUC and then Majuli University of Culture, Assam.
Of the 3, MUC has made considerable progress till date, he said.
The VC then highlighted Manipur's contributions in the field of sports and art and culture, adding that MUC has a huge role to play in preserving and promoting the cultural aspect of the state.
So far, 12 subjects have been introduced in MUC and at present, around 1200 students are enrolled.
Although the number of students seeking admission is double the presently enrolled number of students, lack of infrastructure is limiting the enrolment rate.
Students from Bangladesh, Assam, Tripura and others want to study at MUC and as such, the university could become a hub for South East Asian cultural studies once the Act East Policy is realised.
The celebration was also attended by MUC registrar L Radhakanta as president, while chief librarian Th Khomdon, Examination controller in-charge L Devendrajit Sharma, finance officer S Gitmala and deputy registrar Dr L Surjit were present as guests of honour.
