As part of 'Azadi Ki Gaurav Yatra' rally, which is being organised nationwide by Indian National Congress from August 9 till 15 to mark 75 years of India's independence, Congress leaders paid floral tributes to Manipuri freedom fighters at Khongjom War Memorial Complex on Friday.
The event organised jointly by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) and Thoubal District Congress Committee (TDCC) began with offering of floral tributes at the Memorial Pillar located at Khongjom Kheba hilltop led by Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader and former chief minister O Ibobi and MPCC president K Meghachandra.
Later, floral tributes were also paid to the statue of Paona Brajabashi at the foothill of Khongjom Kheba hill along with offering 'Tarpan' to the departed souls at Khongjom river.
Speaking on the occasion, O Ibobi exhorted all to remember and honour the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for India's independence by protecting the unity of India as well as that of Manipur.
He continued that the 'Azadi Ki Gaurav Yatra' rally is being organised to recall the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters for attaining the independence of India and Manipur and to raise the spirit of patriotism.
After the function, Congress leaders went to Wangjing Kodompokpi to participate in 'Azadi Ki Gaurav Yatra' rally with K Meghachandra leading it by holding the tricolour.
The rally passed through DC gate at Thoubal Athokpam and culminated at Khangabok Block Congress Committee Bhavan, Wangbal.
During the rally, Con gress workers shouted slogans against rising inflation, unemployment, GST, LPG price, lack of availability of fertilisers for farmers, etc.
Speaking in connection with the rally, K Meghachandra informed that rally was held to celebrate the 75 years of India's independence, re-remembering the Congress leaders and freedom fighters who took part in independence movement and raise awareness about them among the public along with uniting them for fighting against the problems presently faced by the people.
The rally was also attended by Sugnu MLA K Ranjit, Khangabok MLA O Surjakumar, other Congress leaders and workers.
